Rice Krispie Squares

Classic rice krispie squares have been a family favorite for generations. These are super easy to make and if you have kids that are eager to make something themselves, these are a good place to start. They don’t require any cooking except for the melting of the marshmallows.
The nice thing about these perfect treats is their flexibility. You can customize them for just about any holiday or special occasion with the addition of some colorful add-ins. For spring think pastel colored m&m”s or sprinkles, for summer red, whit and blue for American 4th of July or Red and White for Canada day, or whatever color you feel. In the fall or for Halloween think oranges and blacks and for Christmas, red, green and whatever you feel! Sprinkles, M&M candies, peppermints (crushed of course), cinnamon hearts (for Valentine’s Day). For birthday’s there are so many options. The kids in your family will thank you. Even the big ones.
Birthday Party Rice Krispie Squares:
If you have a birthday theme you can probably incorporate some kind of rice krispie squares treat into the mix. Just use cookie cutters or a sharp knife and cut out shapes. Decorate like you would a cookie and you can even put them on sticks for a rice krispie POP.
Themes for rice krispie birthday treats:
- Under the sea: cut out fish, stars (for starfish) and decorate with faces
- Summer Balloons: cut out in the shape of balloons then decorate with colored icing and sprinkles or colored sugars.
- Sports theme: cut out circles and decorate into sports balls, basketballs, baseballs, soccer balls. Cut out ovals for footballs
- Snake theme: roll into a rope then form a snake head and narrow at the other end for the tail then decorate (don’t forget to add a little tongue coming out).
- Flower Power Party”: press some of the rice krispies squares into cupcake pans to make a pot, then fill them with treats and edible flowers.
- Chocolate dipped treats: Put a square of rice krispie treats onto a lollipop stick and dip in melted chocolate, add sprinkles or candies and let the chocolate set.
There are so many recipes that you can make using rice krispie squares. Let your imagination go wild.

Rice Krispie Squares
Equipment
- 1 9×13" baking pan glass or metal (with lid is helpful)
Ingredients
- ¼ cup butter or margarine
- 5 cups miniature marshmallows or 40 regular sized
- 6 cups Crispy Rice cereal any brand will work
- ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, add butter or margarine
- Once melted, add the marshmallows and stir to coat with the butter, then keep stirring over low-medium heat until they are completely melted then remove from the heat
- If you are using vanilla extract, add it to the marshmallows and stir to combine.
- Pour in the rice cereal and stir until it is all coated. Then transfer into a greased or buttered 9×13" pan using a buttered spatula to make it easier.
- Flatten to make it even without compressing the cereal. Let cool 5 minutes then slice into 15 squares.
