Poppy Seed Perogy (Varenyky) Filling

Poppy seed perogy are traditionally served for Christmas Eve dinner. However, these sweet and delicious dumplings can be enjoyed at any time throughout the year.

The poppy seed is a symbol of wealth, prosperity and fertility and the eating of poppy seed perogy on Christmas Eve is supposed to bring happiness to the family for the upcoming year.

Poppy Seed Perogy (Varenyky) filling

Traditional sweet Perogy Filling

  • 1 cup poppy seeds
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar


  • Scald poppy seed. Grind finely.
  • Add egg yolk and sugar.
  • Mix well.
