Instant Pot Rice
Bye Bye, rice cooker! This instant pot rice is a game changer, perfect every time with no waste. Fluffy and perfect, flavored or plain, it is delicious. My family loves rice and now with instant pot version I can make it without much forethought. I make a lot of recipes that call for day old or cold rice and with my handy Instant pot, I no longer have to think that far ahead. Just prepare the rice in the instant pot then put some on a sheet tray and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes (or more) and then use like you would day-old rice. I swear it’s a deal changer!
2 Ingredient Instant Pot Rice
- White Rice (of your choice) WELL RINSED.
- Water
- Oil (completely optional)
Make your rice in less time with perfect results every time. I can now clear out some space in my cupboard since I no longer need a dedicated rice cooker. Did I say how much I love my Instant Pot! It is still the most versatile appliance in my kitchen.
Do not skip this step!!
RINSE YOUR RICE. No matter how you cook rice, whether it is in an Instant pot, rice cooker or on the stove top, do not forget to rinse your rice. Rinsing your rice removes the excess starch and this results in rice that does not clump together. The rice results in grains that are more separate when cooked. So unless you purposely want sticky rice, please rinse. It may take 4 or 5 good rinses to get the water clear, but do yourself a favor and don’t skip this step.
Make your rice for a side dish, for a complete meal for example a bowl (grain bowl, beef bowl, chicken bowl etc.) or for any dish that calls for cold or day old rice without the added time of a day! The ratio for rice to water in an Instant pot is always 1:1. If you want a little extra fluffy rice add an additional 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water per cup of rice. Trial and error for your desired fluffiness!
I have a Blackstone grill and I love to make fried rice loaded with all sorts of veggies and meats (or no meat at all) and seasonings for a quick and easy meal. I used to have to plan ahead for these dishes but not anymore with my handy Instant pot, it takes no more time than making rice for dinner and the fresh rice doesn’t clump like it would normally if you don’t let it chill properly.
What to do with your Instant Pot Rice:
Obviously you can make instant pot rice and use it as a side dish for your meal right away. If you’re like me and always make too much then the possibilities are endless! You can use it in another meal or you can refrigerate it for up to 3 days for the next or you can freeze it for up to 3 months.
If you can’t think of ways to use your leftover rice here are a few ideas for inspiration:
You could just heat it up and eat it with some salt, pepper and butter…yum. Or you could use it in a Easy 15 minute Korean Beef Bowl or Quick & Easy Beef and Broccoli. You could make Easy Chicken Fried Rice or stuffed peppers. If you’re really adventurous maybe make some burritos.

Instant Pot Rice
Equipment
- 1 6 Qt Instant pot (or larger)
Ingredients
- 3 cups basmati rice *rinsed until the water is clear
- 3 to 3¼ cups water or broth of choice
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions
- Put the 1 Tbsp vegetable oil in the instant pot and rub it on the bottom and sides. This step is optional but I find I have zero sticky bits with this little extra step.
- Rinse the 3 cups basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This may take 5 or 6 washes, but don't skip this step or your rice WILL be sticky.
- Once the rice is rinsed add it to the IP add 3 to 3¼ cups water (the extra 1/4 cup will yield a fluffier rice).
- Add the 1 tsp salt
- Place the lid on the Instant Pot and ensure the valve is set to SEAL then press the rice button to start the IP
- Once the rice is done, let the Instant Pot natural release for 10 minutes, then turn the valve to release any remaining pressure.
- Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.
